Put Up Your Guard - Guest Column

Today I have a guest column for you -- Some wise words on a very important topic from Chris Lawler, a minister in Waynetown, Indiana.  Please leave him some love in the comments!

Put up your guard!
Malachi 2:15-16 NLT

Most people who watch the news or frequent social media sites have heard about the
hacking of an online site that promotes extra-marital affairs.

The existence of such a site says much about us. The fact that there were, apparently,
millions of subscribers, sadly, says much more. And now, as the list of subscribers has gone public (due to the hackers), countless marriages that were secretly in trouble are now going to publicly crumble.

But while this hacking scandal is public and terrible, it is not unique. This event only reveals on the outside what already existed on the inside. We, as a people, have put our guard down when it comes to our hearts, families and marriages. Consider what God says on the matter:

Malachi 2:15-16 NLT
[15] “Didn't the LORD make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth. [16] "For I hate divorce!" says the LORD, the God of Israel. "To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty," says the LORD of Heaven's Armies. "So guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife." (This passages speaks to men, but just as easily applies to both husbands and wives)

It doesn't take a website to crumble a marriage. It just takes an open heart. Sin often needs only an opportunity.

We don't need a website to bring devastation to our families.  We simply need to think "it could never happen to us."  Affairs and marital fractures happened long before today.  And they can happen to any of us.  All of us.

All we need to do is drop our guard.
